Pienza is very small town but its importance in the world of art history and urban design is out of all proportion to its size, is in fact a real gem of early Renaissance architecture: its buildings, the consistent style which gives them unity, its urban design and above all the whole` effect of piazza Pio II, amount to one of the highest and most significant expressions of fifteenth century humanism.

When Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini, the great humanist, became Pope under the name of Plus 11 (1458-64), he wanted to trasform his birthplace, Corsignano, into a real city. Undoubtedly an ambitious project but it was the dream of a humanist who had the means of realising it.

Thus he entrusted to Bernardo Rossellino the task of designing and building it and in fact the latter did begin it and take it quite a long way along the road. It was the death of the Pope which prevented the whole project from being finished.

Not only is there the famous architecture beauties in Pienza, but also the small city is immersed in a really delightful natural frame.

The characteristic hills that surround it, change their colors and perfumes in every season, moving from the sparkling red of summer poppies to the autumn brown of ploughed fields.

From the lanes the panorama view overlooks the valley , an unmistakable countryside with the typical cypresses and the blooming olive- groves.
